A stretch film description is only useful when its measurements refer to the same thing. Micron, width and length describe the film, while gross weight can also include the core and packaging.
Record the application method and roll format alongside the dimensions. Then compare like for like and validate the shortlisted film on representative pallet loads.
Start with the application method
Confirm whether the film is intended for hand application, a machine wrapper or a pre-stretched manual process. That context affects the roll format, handling and compatibility information you need from a supplier.
For machine film, include the wrapper manufacturer and model, carriage type, current programme and current film. A roll that fits physically is not automatically suitable for the process.
Micron describes nominal film thickness
Micron is a unit of thickness: one micron is one thousandth of a millimetre. It helps identify a film, but it does not independently prove puncture resistance, holding performance or suitability for a particular load.
Compare thickness only after the film type, application method, load and supplier's stated tolerances are clear. A thinner or thicker film is not automatically the lower-cost option in use.
Width and usable length define the roll format
Width is normally stated across the web of film. Length should describe the usable film wound onto the roll. Both measurements matter when comparing roll price, handling frequency and expected consumption.
Check whether dimensions are nominal and whether tolerances are available. Two products with similar names can contain different amounts of usable film.
Separate net film weight from gross roll weight
Gross roll weight can include the film, core and other packaging. Net film weight isolates the material available for application and creates a clearer basis for price-per-kilogram comparisons.
Ask for the core weight or net film weight rather than estimating it from the roll in your hand. Record the core material and dimensions as part of the agreed format.
Treat stretch and performance figures carefully
A quoted stretch or pre-stretch figure needs a defined test method and operating context. The number alone does not show what will be achieved by an operator or a particular machine carriage.
Use supplier data to design a controlled trial. Record film breaks, applied material, wrapping time, load movement and rework instead of treating a headline percentage as a guaranteed saving.
Build a specification that can be compared
Give each supplier the same application brief and ask each one to identify assumptions or missing evidence. Keep commercial terms such as delivery, pallet quantity and VAT treatment separate from the technical comparison.
