Micron describes film thickness, but it does not tell you how the film will behave on a particular load or wrapping process.
Use thickness as one comparison input alongside film construction, application, load geometry, puncture points and the measured result on representative pallets.
Why a micron number is not a load rating
One micron is one thousandth of a millimetre. A higher number means a thicker film, but thickness alone does not establish puncture resistance, stretch behaviour, holding force or suitability for a load. Two films at the same stated micron can use different formulations and behave differently during application.
Simple charts that assign one micron to a pallet-weight band leave out load shape, carton strength, edges, pallet build, wrap pattern and handling. Treat those charts as a prompt to investigate, not as approval for transport.
Start with the application method
Hand film is tensioned by the operator, with variation in walking route, overlap and pull. Machine film passes through a defined carriage and programme. The machine model, pre-stretch system and settings can change how much film reaches the pallet and how it is distributed.
Do not transfer a hand-film assumption to a wrapper, or replace a machine film because the new roll has the same width and micron. Confirm the operating context first.
Inspect the load before comparing films
Look for sharp corners, protrusions, gaps, weak cartons, overhang, underhang and a high centre of gravity. Map where the film first tears or where the load first moves. A pallet-build problem may need correction or edge protection rather than a thicker film.
- Record pallet footprint, approximate weight and loaded height
- Photograph representative stable and difficult loads

Run a controlled comparison
Record the current film, roll weight, application method and wrap pattern. Agree what success means before changing the film. Depending on the operation, measures may include applied film mass, breaks, wrapping time, roll changes, rewraps and load condition after representative handling.
Change one planned variable at a time where practical. A lower micron that needs extra revolutions may not reduce applied material. A thicker film is not automatically wasteful if it prevents breaks or repeated wrapping. The relevant measure is the complete process result.
