Hand film buying guide

How to compare hand stretch film specifications

Compare hand stretch film by usable roll content, application, documented properties and controlled load trials—not micron alone.

Published 9 minute read

In brief

Width and micron do not make two hand films equivalent. Net film weight, length, core, formulation, unwind and behaviour in use all affect the comparison.

Create a common data sheet, verify exact product references and then test on the same load families.

Identify the complete roll

Record product reference, width, stated thickness, usable length, gross and net film weight, core dimensions, rolls per case and cases per pallet. Note declared tolerances and data source.

Separate dimensions from performance

Micron is thickness, not a guarantee of puncture resistance, holding force or applied stretch. Treat quoted performance values as product-specific only when the test method and exact film are identified.

Match the film to manual application

Compare unwind, cling orientation, neck-down, roll weight and dispenser compatibility. Observe different trained operators because manual tension and overlap can vary.

Run a controlled load trial

Use normal and difficult pallets. Record applied mass, break rate, rewraps, wrapping time, roll changes and condition after representative handling. Do not change film and technique simultaneously without documenting both.

Approve a product and process together

The final standard should identify the film, load family and approved application. Add change control so a nominally similar replacement is not introduced without review.

Practical checklist

  • Use exact product references
  • Compare net film rather than gross roll weight
  • Request methods behind technical values
  • Include multiple load families and operators
  • Document approved film and application
